Plans to Do in Madrid in Spring
Traditions and Popular Festivals
Holy Week (March 27 – April 5, 2026)
It is a religious celebration, but also an impressive cultural spectacle. You cannot miss the following events:
- Holy Week Concert with the Madrid Municipal Symphonic Band: March 19, 2026, at the Almudena Cathedral.
- Organ music cycle at San Ginés: late March 2026 at the Church of San Ginés.
- Holy Week Saetas: date and location to be confirmed.
- Holy Week Processions: from March 27 to April 5, 2026.
- Tamborrada: Easter Sunday (April 5, 2026) at the Plaza Mayor in Madrid.
May 2nd Festivals
This is a Madrid Community holiday commemorating the uprising against Napoleon's French troops. During this festivity, the Malasaña neighborhood becomes the epicenter with cultural activities, concerts, and a very young and vibrant atmosphere.
San Isidro Festivals (around May 15)
These are Madrid's patron saint festivities. The most traditional thing to do is go to the Pradera de San Isidro to spend the day, dress up as a "chulapo/a," and dance the typical dance, the chotis. In addition, there are free concerts all over the city (Plaza Mayor, Las Vistillas, Matadero…) and numerous well-known artists (like last year, which featured Carlos Baute, DJ Abel, or Melocos, among others).
Nature and “Instagrammable” Walks
- La Quinta de los Molinos: This place is famous for its almond blossoms. Although the peak is usually between February and March, it remains a spectacular walk at the beginning of spring.
- The Retiro Rose Garden: The month of May is the key time to visit this garden inside the mythical Retiro Park, when thousands of roses of all varieties are in full bloom.
- Royal Botanical Garden: This park, located next to the Prado Museum, is an oasis of peace that in spring shows its collection of tulips and medicinal plants in their full splendor.
Cultural and Leisure Events
- Mutua Madrid Open (late April – early May): If you like sports, the Madrid Masters 1000 at the Caja Mágica is an unmissable event where you can see the best tennis players in the world.
- Races at the Hipódromo de la Zarzuela (March 8 to December 29, 2026): The spring days at the Racetrack are an incredible weekend plan that combines sports, betting, and a great outdoor gastronomic offer.
- PHotoESPAÑA: The international photography festival usually starts at the end of spring (May/June), filling the city's museums and galleries with the best photographic exhibitions in the world.
Spring Gastronomy
You also cannot forget the gastronomy during the festivities mentioned above. You cannot leave without trying the Torrijas (typical of Holy Week) or the Rosquillas del Santo during San Isidro. In addition, it is the perfect season to enjoy the picnic areas of the Casa de Campo or the rooftops of Gran Vía.
